It has always been about co-design and production

The Message To The World video was created to offer an insight into the work of the charity. We recognise sadly that pain does exist in the world, and no matter how much we try, we cannot build a world where no one will ever be sad again.

However, together we can build a world where perhaps people suffer less. All the materials we share on this site are geared towards self-care and self-management.

They do not replace professional advice but offer something that may help when there are storms in the sea of life and promote well-being tips, so perhaps some storms can be avoided or minimised.

They were put together listening to the voices of lived experience and because we do care.

We do believe we all have it in us to help build a kinder world, even if that is one conversation, action, policy, or website at a time.

COPEScotland's Aims

To work with others including the voices of lived experience to help build a kinder world where people suffer less, have improved well-being, share learning for others to adopt and adapt, recognise life can be challenging and seek to develop and share tools to help manage the challenges which can be overcome and reduce the impact of challenges which have no immediate solution.

Core to the values of COPEScotland are; the voices of lived experience must be at the heart of developments.

Sometimes this is directly through developing a new tool, sometimes indirectly by listening and hearing what people say matters to them.

We believe for real change to happen, experts by experience are key to shaping service and strategic development as well as new policies that impacts wellbeing in its widest context.

Who better to understand the design of service than the people who have experience of using it, working in partnership in a spirit of mutual respect.

Our Governance

We recognised to be led by the voices of lived experience meant those voices also had a lead role in our Governance structures, steering groups, and strategic planning.

With support where necessary from external sources to ensure compliance with all the necessary policies and procedures for an effective professional organisation.

The key to the recruitment of governance people was that interviews involved people with lived experience, who knew the skills, attitudes and values they sought from those delivering support as well as other panel members who had other experience to bring to the recruitment process.

This website does not replace professional advice; it is a series of tools that people or groups can use for self-care or self-management.

We recognise that not everyone may be online, so we want to try and share these resources as widely as possible so that those online are aware of them to share with those who are not yet able to access materials this way.

The COPEScotland website itself cannot offer any direct one-to-one therapeutic support, although feel free to get in touch with general questions, and we shall help where we can.

COPEScotland recognises there is a need for well-being self-care and self-management tools. Over the years, we have developed many of these with experts by experience.

This site complements what people may also receive from formal therapy or can be used by people who may not be engaged with services.

The courses on the site also offer ideas to others who are in a support role to learn more about the tools to share with people they are working with.

No Man is an Island
No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
John Donne

Whether we realise it or not, we all rely on others to survive. Like the poem of John Donne reminds us, no man is an island. No woman, person, group, or organisation.

There is an interconnectedness between who we are as individuals, groups, organisations, our relationship with the natural world and so much more.

No one alone can be the change the world needs to see. No progress in addressing inequality is enough if others remain excluded from the opportunities which are their rights as citizens of this planet. The planet itself needs more changes than any of us alone can make before it too becomes washed away in the storms and rains of climate change.

Working together, supporting each other, creating the conditions for everyone to thrive and feel a sense of ownership and achievement is what is needed to create the world we do all need to see.

COPEScotland works with many partners and the voices of lived experience, learning and sharing, deepening understanding of the micro-level issues which impact individuals and the macro-level issues which impact us all and the planet.
