There are many definitions of leadership, these are two the author of this piece likes:
''Leadership is the ability to guide others without force into a direction or decision that leaves them still feeling empowered and accomplished." Lisa Cash Hanson.
''When the best leader's work is done the people say, 'We did it ourselves.'' Lao Tzu
We are in strange times when the future seems uncertain and fear, left unchecked can become as much our enemy as COVID19.
While a certain degree of fear is necessary for our safety, fear to a point which paralysis us from making the choices which can keep us safe, is not helpful.
We may have heard of the flight, fight, freeze response.
This is our body's natural reaction to danger. It's a type of stress response that helps us react to perceived threats.
This is an interesting piece from Mind the Mental Health charity.
Now a challenge with COVID 19 is that it can be difficult to manage the fear and anxiety which goes along with the situation we find ourselves in around the changes to our everyday lives on many levels.
However, one way to help manage this is to be informed.
Issue 2 of the 'What's on' is our attempt to continue building one useful reference source which may provide some tips on some of the points mentioned.
This is evolving and each new issue we hope will be better than before, so if you see any errors, things missing, things you think we should change, things you want to see, tell us. Our aim is to be helpful.
We can all play a role in helping be the leaders of our families, communities, cities, countries, the world needs to see.
Sharing accurate information, challenging misinformation, recognising why we all feel anxious, but offering something accurate to help to ease that fear, means more of us may come through this and suffer less.
Leaders don't only exist in large companies, they exist in the living rooms of our homes all over the country when someone shares their anxiety, someone else listens and when the person is ready to hear it, offers accurate information or advice which helps build that person's confidence that leaves them feeling better and more able to cope, with the challenges COVID19 is bringing.
It doesn't matter who we are, what we do, all of us at some time, need someone, to help lead us back to the light.
"You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.".
Michelle Obama
